Mr. Carl F. Haupt

Carl F. Haupt was born in 1926, the third in a family of eight children. When the Great Depression began, his father lost his railroad job. His mother always read to the children. Their major source of entertainment was borrowed books from the school library. Carl entered WWII with service in the U.S. Navy in January 1944,  serving as a radio/radar operator on a PBY-5A Catalina aircraft, flying convoy coverage/submarine lookout. Carl joined the U.S. Air Force in 1950, retiring in 1966 with the rank of Master Sergeant.  Carl and his wife, Sarah, have been married for 67 years and live in Arizona.

Oldest Man to Reach Summit
Some 30 surgeries haven't slowed prolific hiker Carl Haupt of Benson, Ariz., and neither has being 78 years of age. Not only has he a certificate from Guinness World Records showing that he is the oldest man to hike to the top of Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro, but in the past year he also made 146 trips from his home south to help the needy in Mexico's town of Agua Prieta.
